Remote Dog Training Collars Frequently Asked Questions

If you're considering using a remote training collar for your pet, it's natural to have questions. In this guide, we'll cover some of the most commonly asked questions about these devices, their effectiveness, and how to use them safely and responsibly. Whether you're new to remote training collars or a seasoned user looking for more information, we hope this guide will provide you with the answers you need.

  • What is a remote trainer?

Remote trainers enable effective communication with your pet, reinforcing commands and addressing unwanted behaviors. When used correctly, they offer precise timing and consistency, both essential elements for successful dog training. Embrace the power of remote trainers to cultivate a well-behaved and obedient furry companion.

  • How does a remote trainer work?

A remote training system consists of two main components: a handheld "transmitter" and a "receiver" that is attached to a dog's collar. By using the transmitter, you can send signals to the receiver on the dog's collar. Depending on the training scenario, you have the option to choose from four different signals to transmit to the receiver:

    • An audible tone or vibration
    • A brief stimulation lasting 1 second
    • A continuous stimulation lasting up to 8 seconds

Please note that the V-10 Vibration Trainer does not feature stimulation options. Instead, it offers 10 levels of vibration and an audible tone.

The signal emitted by the dog's receiver collar serves to capture your dog's attention or divert them from engaging in unwanted behaviors. Through obedience to your commands or cessation of undesirable behavior, your dog swiftly grasps the importance of evading the tone or sensation emitted by the receiver.

  • Will the stimulation signal hurt my dog?

The purpose of the collar's "stimulation" is to divert your dog's attention by providing an unpleasant yet harmless sensation, akin to the static shock experienced when walking across a carpet in socks.

The BigLeash training collar offers a range of stimulation levels to suit your needs. Many dog trainers find that they can achieve their desired results using a gentle, almost imperceptible level of stimulation. In addition to this, all BigLeash models are equipped with both audible tones and vibration signals. These signals can be used to condition your dog, associating the sound or vibration with the training correction, thus eliminating the need for stimulation.

  • Which stimulation level is correct for my dog?

Begin by starting at the lowest level and gradually increase it as necessary. The ideal stimulation level is reached when your dog responds with a subtle twitch or perk of the ears, similar to a gentle tug on a leash.

The vibration levels for the V-10 Vibration Trainer follow the same approach.

  • What kind of safety features does the BigLeach Remote Trainer have?

The BigLeash offers multiple training levels, along with audible and vibration modes. What sets it apart is the ability to set it to level "0" when the collar is on the dog but not actively used. This prevents accidental signals. Furthermore, the BigLeash S-15 includes an automatic shut-off feature that limits continuous stimulation to 8 seconds.

  • Can my DogWatch Dealer assist me with training?

Many DogWatch Dealers provide training assistance or can suggest a reputable local trainer to assist.

  • What is the correct way to use a remote trainer?

Remote trainers serve two primary purposes:

Helps reinforce desirable behaviors, such as obedience commands. By correctly performing the command, your dog learns to "turn off" the vibration or stimulation.

Addresses and corrects unwanted behaviors, such as digging, chewing, or jumping up. By associating the vibration or stimulation with the unwanted behavior, your dog learns to cease engaging in those behaviors.

It is advisable to avoid using remote trainers for dogs with a history of aggressive behavior, unless under the guidance of experienced dog trainers.

  • How tight should the BigLeash receiver be fastened around my dog’s neck?

Ensure that the receiver collar is comfortably snug around your dog's neck. If it seems like your dog isn't responding to the stimulation, consider adjusting the collar strap to provide a better fit. Make sure the collar is tight enough for the contact points to reach through the undercoat.

  • My dog has some irritation on his neck from the receiver collar.

The skin irritation is probably caused by the contact posts rubbing against the throat. One of the following scenarios is likely to have occurred:

Your dog's collar should not be worn for extended periods. Avoid leaving it on for more than eight hours each day. Additionally, ensure that the collar is neither too tight nor too loose. Proper fit is crucial. You can adjust the contact posts along your dog's neck to prevent any potential skin irritation.

  • Can I cut the excess collar strap off after I fit the collar to my dog?

    Yes, please do.

  • How do I insert the charger into the receiver collar?

The charging port of the receiver collar is located on the back, beneath the protective tab. Gently lift the tab to insert the charger and ensure a secure connection. After charging, be sure to carefully replace the protective tab. Please note: do not attempt to remove the screw that secures the tab in place.

  • How long do rechargeable batteries last?

The battery life of the collar depends on its usage. If the collar is used intermittently and turned off when not in use, the battery charge will last longer compared to frequent corrections or leaving the collar on when not needed. To have a longer-lasting battery, we recommend charging the collar when it is not in use, preferably every night. Frequent charging will not harm the battery or reduce its lifespan or the duration of the charge.

  • What is the warranty on these collars?

DogWatch Inc. offers a 2-year limited warranty on both the BigLeash transmitter and receiver, covering parts and labor from the date of purchase. Additionally, batteries are covered by a 1-year warranty for parts and labor. Accessories, including chargers and splitter cables, are also protected by a 1-year warranty. It's important to note that the warranty does not apply to repairs or replacements resulting from misuse by the owner or dog, improper maintenance, or lost units. Furthermore, any water damage to transmitters labeled as "water resistant" is not covered and may incur repair charges. Please be aware that the warranty becomes void if the unit has been altered or if unauthorized repair work has been attempted. Lastly, the warranty is non-transferable.

  • Can my dog’s collar receiver be accidentally activated by a neighbor’s remote trainer?

No, our remote trainer utilizes a distinct code that is programmed for each collar. To receive the signal, the training collar needs to be paired with a specific transmitter.
